The respiratory system, containing lungs, trachea-bronchial structure, larynx and nasopharingeal cavity, is very often engaged in dogs and cats by chronic problems, mostly inflammastions, sensibilisations and spasms. The delicate structure of the lungs makes them malleable and prone to the potentially death-threatening pulmonic edema. Without adequate reaction against these problems, they usually progress to severe stage with very serious complications.
Problems in other systems and organs very often influence the respiratory system, for example cardiovascular problems and mixed pharyngeal problems. They cause most of all subclinic or clinic edemas and secondary inflammations and sensibilisations. For example the so common in many small and middle breeds reverse sneezing phenomenon, caused by chronic inflammation of specific naso-pharingeal receptors, leads clinically to spastic convulsions of respiratory tract and pharynx, who slowly not only become repetitive independent pathologic spastic reflexes but also cause additional negative periodic influence as pathologic drying the mucosas for example. The heart insufficiency often causes chronic subclinic or clinic lungs edema which respectively leads to decrease of the pulmonar capacity and chronic alveolar inflammations. The diafragmal hernias, especially the operated later than week after the trauma, cause often lasting lungs pathologic changes, for example partial fibroses and atelectases. The chronic respiratory disorders engages not only the lungs. The nasopharingeal polyps, so easily infectable, the chronic proliferative, exudative or chemorrhagic rhinitis, the tracheal spasm and collapse, the bronchial spasms, the chronic laryngitis including traumatic – all these problems are not only uncomfortable for pet and owner but also potentially life threatening and in almost all cases unable to be fully healed.
The pre-asthmatic and the asthmatic syndrome, the chronic idiopathic respiratory inflammations, the night coughing syndrome, the back coughing syndrome (when the dog coughes when playing or laying on its back), the brachicephalic syndrome, the echographic signs of right-sided pulmonar heart stenosis and obstruction and of pulmonar fibrotic process, the X-Ray signs of atelectasis or emphisema – all they require systematic and save control too.
Not so rare the respiratory problems are mixed – the microorganism causes inflammation and in the same time influences as allergen, chronic microorganism rhinitis has also an underlying idiopathic or allergic chronic process – and they are very often almost impossible or cathegoricly impossible to be healed, for example the recurrent cat rhinitis. The respiratory system is influenced also directly or due compression by primary or secondary tumor growth, lungs abscesses, partial lung torsio etc. All of them, when radical surgery approach is not an option, require long-time therapy for control and relief. The lungs require because of their specific tissue structure long and complex healing even in cases of “banal” infections for their 100 % solving.
Sometimes a diagnose of patient with clinically signs of respiratory problem could be made only post mortem, in vivo it is impossible event with X-rays, CT, lavage, byopsy etc. There are even patients without any clinical signs but with embarrassing X-ray view for years. Here coms the termin “idiopathic respiratory syndrome” which also requires therapeutic long control, especially in case of coming stress or anesthesia.
Before any anestesia is very important to estimate the respiratory status, espescially in older, chronicly ill, brachicephalic patients and in all cats – the perioperative lungs edema is more frequent by them in comparison to dogs. By supporting the respiratory system before anesthesia with protective and analeptic save acting products we minimize the anesthetic risk. After the nightmare episodes of acute pulmonar edema (very often in cats even without any anesthesia) the relief reaction is not enough – the organism requires minimum 2 weeks treatment in order not any pathologic consequences to stay till the end of life. The same situation we have with the pulmonar worms – the therapy against the consequences has to start not after the worms killing therapy but in parallel to it. During seasons changes and the cold months especially in cities with durty air, the chronic pulmonar problems become more acute and not healthy patients are under the serious threat of starting pathologic processes.
